Helvetica, for those that do not know, is the font to end all fonts. It’s versatility is endless. It can be serious or casual. It can be elegant, grumpy, eloquent, or grungy. If you’ve ever stopped at a stop sign, you’ve seen Helvetica. If you’ve ever heard of Microsoft, or AT&T, you’ve seen Helvetica. Originally named Neue Haas Grotesk (even more awesome sounding), Helvetica has been around since 1957. That’s over 50 years of fontalicious goodness. In 2007, there was even a documentary made entitled “Helvetica“. A full documentary about a typeface? Crazy, I know. Awesome? Yes. I loved hearing from some of the older designers who were such an influence in their day (an even now). Things have changed so much.
So what am I really rambling on about here? Well, its about this new site (relatively), Love Helvetica, started up by a Twitter friend of mine, ImJustCreateive. I may be a little biased here because I am one of many winners of a lovely Helvetica Moleskine. The site is well put together, and already has some great articles under its belt. The design is done in a clean grid style that exemplifies the font.
So, if this is your first time hearing about Helvetica, go get the font and try it out. It’s well worth your money, and Arial wishes it could be so awesome. And if you already love Helvetica, checkout Love Helvetica. And if you love it so much that you already had that link in your bookmarks, tell me how much you love Helvetica in a comment below.
Note: The word “Helvetica” was used 12 times in this post, including the one in this sentence. No symbolism there, just solid fact. Solid like Helvetica …13 times.
